Curriculum Overview

The curriculum taught at Gaskell Primary School is underpinned by the belief that children should strive to achieve their best. Children are challenged whilst also supported to succeed.

Our aim is to provide quality experiences in all aspects of school life so enabling children to be happy, successful and keen to learn. We believe that this will help them to grow into young people who are fulfilled and able to make a positive contribution to society.

We aim to:

  • Provide an excellent education for all of our children, being one that develops their talents and capacities to full potential and is relevant to the social, cultural and economic need of society.
  • Enable all children to achieve high standards of learning and to develop self-confidence, optimism, high self-esteem, respect for others and achievement of personal excellence.
  • Promote equality of educational opportunities and to provide for groups with special educational needs.
  • Provide for the physical development and personal health and fitness of our children.

Develop in all our children:

  • The skills of literacy, including skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • Skills of numeracy and other mathematical skills.
  • Skills of analysis and problem-solving.
  • Skills in information processing and computing.
  • An understanding of the role of science and technology in society, together with scientific and technological skills.
  • A knowledge of and appreciation of international history and geography.
  • An understanding of and concern for the environment.
  • An appreciation of what citizenship means, including exercising judgment on matters of morality, ethics and social justice.
  • An understanding of rights and responsibility.

Pupils are grouped in different ways according to their learning needs. In the classroom, children work as a whole class, in groups, pairs or individually. They may be grouped by ability, mixed ability, friendship, or interest.

Some children will be withdrawn from class and supported in small groups for a variety of reasons including special educational and social and emotional needs.

We use a wide range of learning and teaching strategies to meet the individual needs of the children.

This promotes good teamwork, continuity and progression. All staff liaise very closely together.

We set high expectations for pupils and staff and place a strong emphasis on developing an agreed set of values that underpin our work.
